I was that football mad kid.
You know, the one who goes everywhere with a ball under his arm. Or on his foot. I came from a big Irish family on my dad's side and my mum's side are from Burma. I grew up as a Catholic. I played football every day and wanted to be a footballer.
I had my chance as a 19 year old to play in Germany and I had professional experience in Switzerland also. I got selected for the England Futsal (5 aside) team. I had to ask my dad's permission to play for England! I loved football skills and tricks and I developed my skills as a football freestyler - One of the first in the UK. I would perform for fans in football stadiums in the UK and across the world. I became a Qualified FA football coach and started my own soccer school in 1998 while in between football contracts. The Skills Academy has now been running for 26 years and we have coached millions of children.
Nike and Adidas started asking me to choreograph their football commercials, so I have had the pleasure of working with Messi, Ronaldo and more over the years.
For a number of years, I placed little importance on going to church, but God did not leave me that way. I now have a beautiful family of my own with my wife, who has a rhyming name - Sheney Delaney, and our three daughters, Faith, Hope and Grace. I still love my work and I certainly love my family. But more and more in the last 10 years or so, my love of football has paled in comparison to my love of God, my love of the Holy Mass and my surrender to asking Jesus to use me however He chooses to build up His Kingdom.
I used to want to be a footballer...Now I just want to be a Saint. And I know that I can only do it through God's power and grace; through loving God and loving others. I still have a long long way to go so please do pray for me that I will fulfill what God wills for my life.

It's not every day that we come across an individual who seamlessly blends professional excellence with profound personal convictions. With an impressive career spanning over two decades, Mike has worked alongside the industry's elite, choreographing football skills for films, commercials, and events. Yet, it's his unwavering humility and deep-seated faith that truly set him apart.
Mike's journey of faith, deeply rooted in community and his Catholic school upbringing, resonates profoundly with many of us. His openness in sharing the evolution of his spiritual life - from questioning the significance of Mass to developing a deep connection with God and the Church - has been inspirational. His role as a Confirmation catechist exemplifies his commitment to the spiritual growth and well-being of our young people, seamlessly integrating his professional achievements and family life with his spiritual mission. What distinguishes Mike, however, is his exceptional ability to engage with our youth, ensuring that no one feels left out. His belief that "My worth is exactly the same as Messi's" struck a chord with our students, challenging them to reconsider notions of value and self-worth beyond materialistic measures. This message of inherent dignity and equality before God is a timely and powerful lesson.
Moreover, Mike's passion for football and his prowess on the field have not only captivated but also actively involved our young individuals. His approach goes beyond mere skill display; it fosters an inclusive environment where every student is encouraged to participate and express their talents. Mike's efforts to include everyone, especially during these engaging sessions, speak volumes about his character and dedication to fostering a sense of community and belonging among our youth. In Mike Delaney, we see an exemplary figure whose faith, humility, and talent significantly enrich our community and inspire our younger generation. We are immensely thankful for his contributions and eagerly anticipate the continuing positive influence of his endeavours on our youth.

Mike Delaney is a dedicated, passionate, practising Catholic who I have known for over 15 years. We attended the same parish at Our Lady of the Crays and he has assisted me in my capacity as a youth leader by taking classes, often involving fitness and football sessions.
I have looked up to Mike as a professional football coach and leader and can vouch for his dedication and passion for his faith and the youth. He never shies away from speaking about his faith journey, particularly in line with his experience in the industry. With years of experience, he remains humble and willing to inspire many by sharing his God-Given talent.
